Drive a little safer this winter season

  1. Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition before hitting the road. This includes having sufficient tire tread and tire pressure, as well as making sure all of your lights are working.
  2. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. This should include items such as blankets, water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, and a first aid kit.
  3. Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle before driving. This includes the windows, headlights, taillights, and mirrors.
  4. Accelerate and decelerate slowly to maintain traction on slippery roads. Avoid sudden movements, such as slamming on the brakes or making sharp turns.
  5. Increase your following distance to give yourself more time to react to other vehicles and road conditions.
  6. Use low-beam headlights in fog or snow to improve visibility.
  7. Avoid using cruise control on slippery roads, as it can cause your vehicle to lose traction and skid.
  8. If you do start to skid, remain calm and avoid slamming on the brakes. Instead, gently ease off the gas and steer in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go.
  9. If you get stranded in your vehicle, stay with it and call for help. Do not try to walk in a storm, as it can be easy to lose your bearings and become disoriented.
  10. Finally, always drive according to the conditions of the road and the weather. Don't be afraid to slow down or pull over if necessary. Safety should always be your top priority when driving in winter weather.
