A few simple things to help start your day

There are several strategies that can be helpful for shifting your mindset from a negative to a positive one before the start of your workday:

  1. Start your day with self-care: Take a few minutes to practice some form of self-care, such as exercise, meditation, or journaling. This can help you feel more grounded and positive as you start your workday. I have been practicing meditation for years. Each morning try to spend about 10 minutes meditating or even doing yoga. You don't always have to go to the gym or get a trainer to exercise.
  2. Set positive intentions: Take a few minutes to think about what you hope to achieve or experience during your workday. This can help you focus on the positive aspects of your day and set the tone for a more productive and enjoyable experience. The more you work on this the happier you will be throughout your day. Some things that help me keep focused on the positives is by writing down my top priorities for the day so I can work on what is most important for not only myself but my team. Remember, not every email and phone call needs to be tended to the minute they're received.
  3. Practice gratitude: Take a few minutes to think about the things in your life that you are grateful for. This can help shift your focus away from negative thoughts and towards a more positive perspective. We all have something we can choose to look at negatively at the beginning of our day. Maybe you didn't sleep well, your coffee maker broke, stubbed your toe, cut off while driving to work and the list goes on. Try to find the positive in that moment by remembering what you are grateful for. Is the toe stubbing worth throwing your whole day off for?
  4. Find something to look forward to: Look for something positive to look forward to during your workday, whether it's a meeting with a colleague you enjoy working with or a task that you find interesting and fulfilling. Perhaps you have a special something planned for after work. Try to use this to energize you during that afternoon slump! At the end of my list for the day, I like to write down what I have going on after work that I am excited about.
  5. Seek support: If you're struggling with negative thoughts or feelings, don't be afraid to reach out to a colleague, friend, or therapist for support. Having someone to talk to can be a helpful way to gain perspective and shift your mindset towards a more positive outlook. Don't wait to bring things up!

In conclusion, take care of yourself, set positive intentions and work towards your goals daily. By practicing a few simple things at the start of your day and subsequently carrying these throughout your day, you'll find it easy to shift those negative thoughts to positive ones. Practice makes perfect and there is no right or wrong way for you to do this!
